Just to remove any confusion this is about getting any handicapping of players done fairly. NOT removing handicapping.

My point is that the current handicapping rules don't achieve what they set out to do.  Surely the idea is to give everyone a fair chance?  With some of the current tournaments(not counting those who are handicapped) you can pick the winner from 3 or 4 entrants each time.

Example: John McMahon (you might want to check his CV on the Supreme League) played on the BAPTO Pro Tour in 2007(the exact equivalent of the EPA Pro Tour) but still played off 0 for the Bobby Singh. And yes we did mention this.

If you truly wanted to give everyone a fair chance then you'd probably handicap singles winners, averages winners, tournament winners, pro tour top 128, County A & Internationals.  That would be fairer to the average pub player and to those going into competitions for experience.

It's a wash kid....you're in Atlantic City now, not back in the Stock Room playing with baby dolls.

I don't think there is a fair way to handicap someone?
Maybe let the crapper player (i.e me) have the break every time or something?
Other than that, the worse player will just have to get better, that's the point of me entering these comps anyway, to try and improve my game, i know i'm not going to win against you bunch of machines

Handicapping is done in golf we all know that lets take me and my brother at golf i would have to give him about 15 shots now if we where to play pool i would want -1 or 2 but when you look into it ,it all comes down to practice and ability to where i got at golf i practiced hard to where lee got at pool he practiced hard so if you dont like having an advantage practice ?

MY BOY WILL BE THE BEST

just a thought would'nt you want to know what standard you need to get to .
& is'nt it sweeter when you do win it's on a level playing field also do you remember when you beat a good player what sort of feeling you had i bet you had a big grin on you're face even if no one could see it then you told you're mates all about it

i remember now...... 2002 in the Cadpl cup final, cleared them up when you went in off, raised the roof - i felt great beating the great poolace147 - only 1 frame though, not done it since

I don't think it all needs handicapping just the entrance money lowering and they you get more players entering.
At say £25 quid entrance fee you scare off a lot of players who are average (like me) as we don't feel it is worth the cost knowing you will be lucky and have to play well just to make quarters.
Jimmy has it right at Spot on, £10 is more realistic alright the prize money may not be brilliant but it means the quality players don't keep getting richer!
More people will enter and may pull a few surprises and enjoy a day out with the Notts pool community.....i just think things always seem to be aimed at the better or best players in Nottingham.......how are we going to encourage new players if this is the case.

Im not a big fan of handicaps.  On the Premier Tour i give pro's a -1 handicap against amateurs but on everything else i run everyone is off scratch. Last year i ran the North West Open in Crewe and had 6 pro's out of 73 entries at the event and only one pro got past the quarters.

The pro's usually have to put in a lot of time (and money) to get to the status they have so its harsh to penalise them.
