Yes well done Mitch, excellent performance. Mitch beat Josh Finch not Matt though Matt did well to win all of his group games and reach the quarter-finals. Hopefully my lads will make a good contribution to the county team this season and, looking at some of the players on Sunday, i can see a massive improvement for Notts youths this year. The youths are going in the right direction! |

Mitch Butterworth is the 2009 Nottinghamshire Youth Open Pool Champion after putting in an excellent display of finishing at Phoenix Cue Sports in Eastwood last weekend. The field was made up largely of the current youth county team and the entrants played in groups of four players with the top two from each going forward to the knockout phase, and the chance to win the title, trophy and a share of the Phoenix club vouchers on offer. Group One saw Derby's Matt Finch, fresh from his move from the Derbyshire county squad, win the group convincingly and against the odds. Matt made short work of his opponents as Grant Stocken, Curtis Williams and Dan Owen all lost to the 10-year old while Curtis did get through in second place. Group Two was just as one sided with Nottingham's Daniel Binks heading the group undefeated and Derby's Josh Finch just behind with two wins from three matches played. Matt Guy was expected to get through but lost out to Josh in their final group game. Heanor's Ryan Baker was taking no prisoners in Group Three, winning through without dropping even a frame. And so it was a case of who was second best on the day to see who would progress as runners-up and it was youth team captain Demi Barber who just got through at the expense of Sam Cummins and Tom Bullford. Mitch Butterworth started Group Four in control but was the only player to win his group and not take all three wins. Instead Mitch lost out to Andy French 3-1 but still headed the group as both players went into the next round as Dan Jackson and Ryan Yates missed out. The Quarter-Finals were an open draw and Mitch got the better of Demi in the first match while Andy also progressed with a very good win over Daniel. Ryan ended Curtis' interest in the event and, in the all-Derby clash, Josh defeated his younger borther Matt as all four matches finished 3-1 to the victors. The Semi-Finals went upto best of 7 frames and in game one Josh was the huge underdog against Andy but after two frames was always in control as Andy let some bad luck go to his head with Josh winning 4-2. Game two was as tight as it could get with Mitch and Ryan in the deciding frame Ryan cut the black into the top corner only to see the cue ball drop into the bottom corner pocket. It can be a cruel game at times! And so 16 became 2 and after a scrappy first frame Mitch broke and dished in the second and was always the winner as Josh never got much of a look in. A great day of youth pool and, on this display, it seems that the future is bright for Notts junior pool. Any unattached under 18's who are interested in being part of the Notts youth squad can telephone the team manager, Richard, on 07870 189444. |
